I suggest VBPro because that's what I've used but both it and the other suggestions are ways of editing, like EasyBCD, the BCD file that is used after XP instead of boot.ini. I've described my procedure in an earlier message and I suspect that if you try VISTABootPro installed on your XP drive that it will track down the other OS installations and sort things out. I've an idea that with a multiboot setup that the BCD file needs to be on the first drive which would be in your case and mine on the XP partition and without that drive connected it can't be.
EASYBCD 1.7 3 64 BIT
I have installed XP / Vista / Vista Test Bed / WIN 7 32 bit / WIN 7 64 bit on my desktop which has 3 hard drives and have no complications. I suspect that for you and for pwatt01 that the problem goes back to not having both disks connected all the time. I used Easy BCD 1.7.1 Do I need to use v 1.7.2. How do I tell it that I have XP and win7 so it will allow me to dual boot. So what did I do wrong? So when it says it needs Vista what do I do. So I had to do a repair by reinstalling XP. as if i have tried to open windows, but it didnt work.
EASYBCD 1.7 3 WINDOWS 7
When i used easyBCD on the win7 HDD, i had to add windows xp manually, saying it was on drive E:\ (the XP drive), but when i choose the option in the bootloader, it resets the computer.Īny thoughts? This is proving to be quite frustrating.ĮDIT: just to odd things up even more, when i get the black screen using the XP bootloader and reset my computer, next time i open windows 7 it has the 'incorrect startup detected-would you like to use startup repair?' screen. Is there a tool in XP that tells me what to put in for "multi,' "disk," "rdisk," and "partition" things are on so I can edit boot.ini properly?ĭefault = multi (0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWSĭefault = multi (0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\ WINDOWS = "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" / noexecute = optin /fastdetectĬ:\CMDCONS\ BOOTSECT.DAT = "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdconsĭefault = multi (0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\ WINDOWS = "Windows 7" /fastdetectīut when i choose windows 7 in the boot loader, it does nothing but displays a black screen.

What should it have for dual boot to XP (as above) and W7? According to Disk Manager in the Administrator Tools, XP is actually on Disk 2, and W7 is on Disk 0 partiation 1 (I think). I'll probable figure it out eventually, but does this look right? It clearly doesn't to me right now at my state of knowledge. Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn /usepmtimer

So the W7 install didn't modify it to add a second OS.ĭefault=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS So here's a cut and paste of my boot.ini file. But I'm still in the very early stages of reading up on it.
EASYBCD 1.7 3 HOW TO
I was just reading on-line about that file, what it does, and how to edit it. Is there another boot manager (free) that I can use to get this working? Why doesn't the W7 install install a boot manager for me? Etc.

For example, PQboot for Windows right now says my "Windows 7" partition is Active (I've already installed it there), but my PC still boots to XP. Again, the W7 install finds the empty partitions and installs, but when I go to reboot, I haven't yet found a way to boot into W7 once it's installed.Įven booting with the Partition Magic/Boot Magic CD, unsing PQBoot and PQBoot for Windows doesn't seem to help. I've tried blowing away that partition and creating a new partation on one of the other drives, and installing W7 there, etc. I've tried creating a partition on the RAID 0 drive and installed W7 there. I have tried all sorts of combinations of installations and partition configurations. I have Norton Partition Magic 8.0 and Boot Magic. I can get it to install, but when I go to reboot, it either only boots into XP or it doesn't boot at all. I have tried many different configurations of installation of Windows 7 64-bit.

The others are for additional storage (backups and I do video editing, so the other is for video files). I have four physical hard drives, two of which are set up as a RAID 0 and are where XP resides.
